Frequently Asked Questions
Got questions about AdBlue®? We’ve put together our most frequently asked questions to help you understand, store, and use it with confidence.
AdBlue® is a high-purity urea solution (32.5% urea and 67.5% deionised water) used in diesel vehicles equipped with Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) systems. It helps reduce harmful nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions, making your vehicle more environmentally friendly and compliant with Euro 6 standards.
AdBlue® is injected into the exhaust system of diesel engines fitted with SCR technology. When heated, it converts into ammonia, which reacts with harmful NOx gases to produce harmless nitrogen and water vapour — reducing emissions and improving air quality.
Most modern diesel vehicles, including cars, vans, HGVs, buses, tractors, and construction machinery, use AdBlue®. If your vehicle is Euro 6 compliant or has an SCR system, it will require AdBlue®.
AdBlue® is stored in a separate tank, not mixed with diesel fuel. You’ll usually find the AdBlue® filler next to the fuel cap, under the bonnet, or in the boot area depending on your vehicle’s make and model.
If your AdBlue® tank runs empty, most vehicles will either enter limp mode or refuse to start until it’s refilled. It’s important to top up before the warning light reaches zero to avoid downtime or inconvenience.
Usage depends on your vehicle and driving style. On average, AdBlue® consumption is 3–5% of diesel use, meaning for every 1,000 litres of diesel, you’ll use 30–50 litres of AdBlue®.
Yes — AdBlue® can be stored safely in sealed containers away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. For commercial users, IBC containers, drums, or bulk tanks are ideal. Always use clean equipment to prevent contamination.
AdBlue® typically has a shelf life of 12 to 18 months if stored correctly between -6°C and +30°C. Always check the manufacturer’s expiry date and avoid exposure to high heat or freezing conditions.
No, AdBlue® is non-toxic and non-flammable, but it can cause irritation if it contacts skin or eyes. Simply wash with water if this occurs, and handle using standard hygiene practices.
You can purchase AdBlue® from TW Fuels in a range of sizes — from 5L and 10L cans for private motorists to 220L drums and 1000L IBC containers for commercial and agricultural users. We also offer bulk delivery and automatic refill services with optional remote tank monitoring.
